A little over a week before Formula Drift Round 3, we were not planning on having a car in our tent since we only had a 20×10 space available rather than the usual 30×10. But we decided last minute we could probably fit an AE86 in that extra 10 feet if we scooted the car’s ass end into the inside of our tent. A last minute plea to our Facebook and Instagram friends got us in touch with John who live in the area and had an AE86. He was up for a couple of days straight before the event getting the car ready – he also warned us the car was not intended to be a show car. Overall, we think car looked pretty sick. Gave a grassroots drift machine in the works vive. Was also happy to see the classic (original) ENKEI92 wheel on there and the F20 engine (S2000) of course. This was our 3rd Formula Drift event where we had a booth/tent and we’ve had a Hachi Roku in every one. Looking forward to the next one! Formula Drift round 3 took place at Palm Beach International Raceway this past weekend where Michael Essa, driver of the GSR Yokohama Tire BMW E46, took the number one spot. Rain was expected throughout the weekend but only really came down during Friday night’s practice session – other than a few sprinkles off and on, the track was pretty much dry. Michael Essa might have only qualified in the 21st position but he came to win for Saturday’s main event. It was Essa’s first ever Formula Drift podium finish and it was a good one – winning first place! A breakdown of Essa’s winning night after the jump.

Most of us who follow Formula Drift around the country would agree, if you only had one round you could attend in the season, round 2 at Road Atlanta would be the one. One of, if not the most energetic Formula Drift crowd in the series combined with an awesome track with a crazy fast entry, can only make for an exciting event. Formula Drift’s first ever event took place here at Road Atlanta. Road Atlanta also built horse shoe part of the track specifically for Formula Drift. It’s one thing to convince a professional race track to host a drift event (specially in 2004), it takes exceptional foresight to make an addition to the course specifically for it. Anyway, Friday’s qualifying session gave a good feeling of what was to come for the weekend! Coming off an exceptional performance in Long Beach, Fredric Aasbo came out swinging during qualifying to take the number one spot with a score of 90.5.
